Dental Technician Career Spotlight on Lola Karolina Welch, Senior Prosthetics Technician

Meet Lola Karolina Welch, a senior prosthetics technician specialising in implant supported dentistry. Lola has over 20 years experience and worked with many experts and respected surgeons within the industry.
Her main fields of interest are full arch screw-retained restorations with a high level of aesthetic composite characterisation.

1. What attracted you to the field of dental technology?

I don’t remember how I found out about our profession but I know that I was attracted by the combination of medical science and art we are working with every day.

2. What company are you with now?

I’m currently at the award-winning Ceramic Designs Laboratory in Hove.
We are based a stone’s throw away from the sea and I love it!

3. What is your (preferred) job title?

I’m a Senior Implant Prosthetic Technician.

4. What is a typical (or not so typical) day-in-the-work-life for you?

I deal mainly with All-on-X restorations, starting from the immediate load conversions and finishing with the high-end hybrids and thimbles etc. I also do CAD design including implant planing and surgical guides design/manufacture which I love.

5 How did you get your current job?

I was headhunted by a recruiter via LinkedIn. And yes, I do like to brag about it!

6. What skills came easily to you, and what skills took longer to learn?

I’ll be honest, things that are purely based on aesthetics came to me easier than learning the actual function. I wish it was the other way round as after, all beauty is subjective and with function you cannot argue!
I’m learning every day.
I’m currently working on my Panthera Master Cup case (I’m in the Top 10 of this years competition) and I can confidently say that I’ll be a better technician once it’s all over. I already am!

7. What advice do you have for others wanting to be successful and fulfilled in their dental technology careers?

Reach out for all the opportunities you can see on the horizon! Don’t wait for them, they quite likely won’t come on their own!
I had a change of mindset last year, and I work hard to prove to myself - and to others, that this job can be more than 9 to 5 in a dusty basement.
I’ve started sharing my work on social media and I’ve had amazing work related experiences that have come from that. But remember it’s all down to you and how much energy you are willing to put in.

8. If you could be paid for your job with something other than a pay-cheque, what would it be?

Hmmm good question! I would say time!
I wish I could have more free time… but as we can’t stretch the day or magically add more days to the week it will have to be food! Thai food and vegan Ben and Jerrys ice cream please!

… thanks Lola 🙂
